UK Retail Sales Surge Signals Economic Rebound Amid Seasonal Demand
British retail sales jumped 3.1% year-over-year in June, marking the strongest growth this year as warmer weather spurred spending on seasonal goods. The British Retail Consortium reported robust performances across both food and non-food categories, with food sales climbing 4.1%—partly inflated by rising prices—while non-food purchases ROSE 2.2%.
Helen Dickinson, BRC CEO, noted the uptick reversed May's retail-driven GDP drag, though consumer caution persists amid economic uncertainty. The data adds to tentative signs of recovery after consecutive contractions in April and May, the first since 2009.
